faith based ministries

Forty-three percent of all giving in the United States is to faith-based
organizations. Philanthropists are not only supporting church
sponsored programs, but are making gifts to a variety of independent
ministries. Today, faith-based giving is in the forefront as church
foundations, as well as local and national faith based community
foundations, are growing in size and numbers. Even public funding
is becoming available for faith-based organizations as their
effectiveness is being recognized.

The church has always been, and continues to be an important place to
invest your charitable dollar. Traditionally, religious leadership has let the
efforts to address social problems. Religious philanthropists are not only
tithing, but are making gifts to more innovative church-sponsored solutions.
These contemporary initiatives may include:

  • Family social services
  • Daycare for working parents
  • Neighborhood redevelopment
  • Interfaith collaborations

Many men and women of faith are addressing individual, family, and
community needs both next door and abroad through many independent
faith-based ministries. Their work is undertaken quietly, and their leadership
is often unsophisticated in fund raising. Yet their efforts are among the
most successful in affecting lives. Responding to a spiritual call, rather
than a career, they truly feel they are “doing God’s work.” Many of these
organizations are working in your community, and if you want to support
programs organized around an individual’s passion, you should consider
helping these “inch wide and mile deep” efforts. Some examples of
independent ministries are:

  • Statewide prison ministries
  • Job training for gang-impacted youth
  • Little League for inner-city kids
  • Independent living assistance for the elderly
